Adventures in Couponing

Last week I took the first steps in couponing to save us some money. I only attempted one store, so this will hopefully change after I make some tweaks to my lists and collect more coupons.

This is what I know so far:

  1. I saved 40% on my overall costs, around $69 dollars. For first time out, I don’t think thats great, but I hope to improve. I was able to pick up quite a few household items and cereals that should last us for quite a while.
  2. I tried to plan with the hubby to come up with dinner ideas for the week. I believe that if I had been able to follow thru with this, with him, that I would have spent less on miscellaneous items. Better planning for meals, will make better lists of items to get.
  3. I still believe that keeping my hubby from going to the store throughout the week to pick up random items will save us about $240 a month. This also includes my random visits.
  4. I now get 4 Sunday newspapers sent to me with the total cost being about $26 a month. With that I get multiple coupons on items I can stock up on, or get multiples of, and being that most papers coupons are pilfered and searched through before I can actually get to them this will make it much easier. Saves on gas, time, and is even cheaper per paper when buying multiples.

With the help of my dear friend, Jenny, and the couponing websites (thriftynorthwestmom.com, thecouponproject.com, couponingtodisney.com, Redplum and Super Savers coupon sites) I will gradually attempt more stores, and do a better job at saving. My number one goal is to save at least 60% when shopping. So, first 2 goals for this week: Set a respectable budget for groceries a month and create weekly recipes with the hubby to plan for next weeks shopping trip. My plan is for Mondays or Tuesdays to be my super saving couponing days. Wish me luck people. It is in writing now, so I will attempt to be true to these goals.

Stream of Consciousness Sunday…

Welcome, folks to Stream of Conscious Sunday.  That’s right!  I will write whatever comes to my beautiful little mind in the next five minutes and we will see what we get.

So, I have been trying to learn to coupon because my good friend has been doing it. Well, I love the idea that whatever I save will go towards our family vacation. Possibly to Disneyland.  Ever been to the site couponingfordisney.com?  Go there.  It’s cool. And a tad bit overwhelming.

I say this as I am having serious difficulties pulling my crap together and discerning which coupons you can use where, how many times, for things I actually NEED. I mean, organization with work, I can do. When I get home it’s like a button or switch has been turned off and I can’t find my keys to save my butt. Now that I am a stay-at-home mom,  nothing is organized like I would like it to be. Be able to sort out coupons??? Nope.  Not succeeding so well here.

I went to our local Albertson’s last night to pick up a Sunday newspaper that contained the ads in it.  Unfortunately, all the newspapers had been picked free of said ads.  I called Safeway and another store, and they had the same issue.  So, my plan was to get up at o-dark-thirty this morning and get the Sunday paper right when they opened.  Yeah, didn’t think that would happen either.  Sunshine decided she was going to return to her “I am teething so I am going to be up all night reeking havoc on all those I love and making them miserable.”

Guess what, Sunshine? Mission successfully completed. Your mom is officially exhausted.

So, with that… I went to the store about 3:00pm.  There were actual papers there, and they did have ads in them. I didn’t stop to look at exactly what kind of ads, but man… I am not planning on getting any newspapers any time soon again.  I got doubles and triples of the same ads to stores I don’t go to, and all the stores I do visit, there were nothing.  Nada. Zip. Zero. Zilch.  Sigh… so, I guess I will stick with coupons I can pick up online.

With my tiredness, and the little-to-no energy to make yummy sweetpotato-apple-pear baby food recipe for Sunshine… I found that I do not wish to go and socialize and want to just veg.  It used to be that the DOH would be the one dragging his feet and refusing to go see people, even though they were offering free food, and fun.  Now, the tables have turned. The DOH says we need to go socialize to set good examples for Sunshine, while I would just rather veg out here and do what?  Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Zilch.  Next weekend is going to be crazy busy and I secretly hope I can store said sleep or energy I have to survive the schedule for next weekend.  Doubt that will happen, but one can only hope.

This week, I’ve got three night choir practices. The Doh get’s Sunshine for the duration I guess.  He brought home the plague…okay not the plague but a seriously evil cold and Sunshine and I have been fighting it.  So far, knock on the proverbial wood, we have not gotten it.  But with the lack of sleep the last 2 nights, I am not holding out on that.  Choir concert next Saturday night.  Me? 1st Soprano.  Cold?  Not a good combination, and those high notes not looking so good. Low notes would be even lower. Better start drinking Nance’s magical mix now.

Well, I am off to go and take care of Sunshine and get her ready to socialize, as I am a hopeless case.  My love to all, and don’t forget to giggle.
